Scary Statistic

In a CNN Article I read this morning, the writer pointed out that "nearly 40 percent of babies born in the United States in 2007 were delivered by unwed mothers, according to data released last month by the National Center for Health Statistics. The 1.7 million out-of-wedlock births, of 4.3 million total births, marked a more than 25 percent jump from five years before."

While I can agree that a single-parent environment is not terrible, it has been proven in many studies that it is generally less beneficial to the children's development. With this new, shocking statistic I am really worried about the next generation. To me, this is very scary! What do you guys think?

I suspect that a significant portion of the out-of-wedlock births are to couples who aren't in a rush to get married anymore, not necessarily single parents. Over time, the US population is waiting longer to get married if they get married at all. Many unmarried people with children are nonetheless in monogamous, healthy, lasting relationships with another person. Perhaps this is lamentable, but it's not a recent phenomenon, just a higher degree of something that's been around ;)
